Q:  Do water shoes lessen the weight-bearing benefits of exercise? What about osteoporosis? Do people need to do exercises other than aqua aerobics to get the benefits of weight bearing exercise?

A.  Do water shoes lessen the weight-bearing benefits of exercise?  I think the shoes wouldn't affect weight bearing water exercise. The water would have to be extremely shallow (and uncomfortable for most) to have weight bearing benefits. One of the best characteristics of water exercise is that it isn't weight bearing.

What about osteoporosis? People with osteo do retain and improve their ossification levels. There is enough resistance in water exercise to provide muscle strengthening, which is the foundation of point of free weight training for osteo improvement.

Do people need to do exercises other than aqua aerobics to get the benefits of weight bearing exercise? The most recent studies indicate that a well blended format of light floor exercises with free weights along with a substantial aerobic water training program have the best effect on de calcification with osteo clients. Warm-Up/Meet-Up
This is a good way to get your class started, especially if there are lots of new people who do not know one another.
Begin walking in place, heels up only, arms swinging at the side of the body front to back. Use this time to explain the hand position choices and rationale for each: fist, hand open palm back, scoop forward, and thumbs-up. As you explain, increase lower body intensity to include alternating feet off the bottom of the pool with arm swings, increasing height of knees and pace according to the ability of each participant.

Now you are ready to move! With the hands in thumbs-up position, arms swinging, invite each person to move about the pool and shake hands with everybody, telling their name.
After a few moments of meet ‘n greet, direct everyone to return to their place and get ready for the TEST. Ask everyone now if they know one another’s name, and the first letter of their own. Explain that you will call out the letters of the alphabet and when the first letter of their name is called, they should raise their arms as high as is comfortable and wait until they hear someone(s) in the group shout their name before lowering their arms.
When you get to X, Y, Z, urge them to bring a friend with one of those letters not represented for next time so you can finish in style. Now have everyone raise both hands in a wave, turning to all with a smile (hokey pokey style).
Surely everybody’s in the pool now, even late comers. Everyone has had some talk time. Now they are warmed up and ready to focus on the movement activity workout you have planned for the day.
